Neo-Romanticism, like minimalism, started out as something quite different from what it became; both grew out of ideas and techniques that first appeared as special cases of modernism. Collage and quotation were techniques for introducing familiar musical imagery into a non-tonal context; once admitted into the musical fabric, the tonal references tended to take over.
